February 2018 Meeting – Irish Heritage Workshop

Posted by hrgenealogy on January 21, 2018

For the last time this year, our February meeting will be in the Upstairs Quiet Reading Room at the Highlands Ranch Library. We’ll take advantage of the intimate setting for a workshop on Irish Heritage, facilitated by HRGS member Megan Koepsell.

Irish MapAre you facing numerous “brick walls” while researching your Irish heritage? Do you wonder if you’ll ever discover when your ancestors came to America – or where they lived when they got here? Well join us at the Highlands Ranch Library at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 6 and get the help you need.

Megan will give us tips on places and websites she uses for her research, to include several Irish and UK subscriptions like Find My Past and British Newspaper Archive. She’ll demonstrate how to use these resources by taking questions from participants. Bring your toughest problems and “brick walls,” and Megan will search for solutions.

This will be a great opportunity for those of us with Irish Heritage to really make progress on our “brick walls.” And for those who can only wish they were Irish, there will be plenty of tips and techniques you can learn as well.

Show up at 6:30 p.m. for snacks and discussions for fellow genealogists. You never know who might have the solution to your hardest “brick wall.”

As always this time of year, in the event of inclement weather check this website before venturing out.

HRGS December 2017 Meeting: Listening to the Voices of Our Ancestors

Posted by hrgenealogy on November 19, 2017

Some of the most fun in genealogical research is those moments where we feel we were guided to find that certain record or document that has eluded us: times that seem almost too coincidental to be coincidental. Join us 7:00 p.m., Tuesday December 5th for “Listening to the Voices of Our Ancestors.” HRGS member Megan Reilly Koepsell will share amazing stories of her ancestors guiding her research. Bring your own stories to share at the end of this program. We want to hear from other people who have had similar experiences to Megan.

Megan has been interested in family history since childhood.  She has been doing genealogy for almost ten years, and because of the help of her ancestors, she believes she has found a lot of information and broken through many brick walls! When not doing genealogy, she is a registered nurse who is a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner, a Reiki practitioner, and teaches meditation at an Oncology rehab center. She also co-leads meditation trips to Ireland.

Show up at 6:30 p.m. for snacks and discussions for fellow genealogists. You never know who might have the solution to your hardest “brick wall.” After the meeting, join us for libations and stimulating conversation with fellow genealogists at Landsdowne Arms.

See you then!

Posted by hrgenealogy on August 23, 2017

Did you know that German-Americans are the largest ethnic group in America? That fact gives the Highlands Ranch Genealogical Society’s September program special significance. If you have German ancestry – or if you don’t, but want to learn some nifty research tips – join us at 7 p.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at our first fall meeting in Shea A and B of the Highlands Ranch Library for “Researching Your German Heritage,” presented by John Mears.

This is not John’s first appearance at HRGS. Last fall, he gave a presentation on researching Irish heritage that received rave reviews. We’re certain not to be disappointed with this encore. Learn how to make the most out of a research trip to Germany, and, more importantly, how to find much of what you are looking for online from the comfort of your home.

Involved with genealogy for 45 years, John has been a professional genealogist for the last 15 years. He has worked in three Family History Centers – in Detroit, Michigan; in Albany, New York; and in Centennial, Colorado.  He also taught seminars for the Colorado Genealogical Society as well as beginning, Irish, and German genealogy classes at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado and at seminars throughout Colorado. He recently retired as the Temple Recorder at the Denver Colorado Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Show up early at 6:30 p.m. for networking with fellow genealogists. You never know who might have the solutions to your most vexing research questions.

See you on the 5th!
